Design Manager / Engineering Manager - Highways England Scheme - Major Project - Penrith Area - £60k+ - Civil Engineering

Our client have a growing portfolio of exciting opportunities and are looking to recruit a Design Manager/ Engineering Manager to join their expanding team delivering for key clients including National Highways. They have an immediate requirement on the A66 North Trans-Pennine project as we prepare to commence detailed design on this £1bn + project being delivered collaboratively with their partners.

Core responsibilities

As Design Manager you will have overall responsibility for the design of the permanent and temporary works, managing our designers to ensure timely and cost efficient delivery to scope (technical, safety, environmental, social value), schedule and budget. In addition you will drive digital, embrace innovation and strive for performance improvements across the company.

Key Duties include:

? Preparing a well-defined scope for design services, including budget, programme, deliverables schedule, information required schedule, risk, targets etc. Ensuring there is clear understanding by the design teams and there are processes in place for on-going monitoring and reporting.
? Compliance with Design Management processes, including client governance requirements
? Facilitate engagement between the design team and construction team to ensure ‘right-first-time’ designs with consideration of cost efficient, safe, sustainable buildability.
? Perform the role of Principal Designer and ensure compliance with the CDM regulations
? Establish with the design team a ‘Safety in Design’ culture focused on removing safety risks and hazards at all stages
? Ensure that Designs embrace sustainability and whole life costing including carbon reduction and circular economy objectives.
? Drive Value Engineering and pro-actively manage the design related project risk & opportunities
? Working across teams and implementing our approach to BIM and CDE

About You
You will be from an engineering background with drive and enthusiasm and can-do attitude to work collaboratively with the team to drive delivery of the design. Key requirements include:
• Bachelors or Masters Degree (or equivalent) with previous experience in undertaking a similar role and applying design management processes.
• Previous experience working on National Highways projects is preferable, but not essential
• Membership of a relevant professional institution is desirable
• Ability to lead and manage teams to achieving successful outcomes
• Strong communication skills
• Awareness of technical design standards and environmental (DMRB desirable)
• Awareness of key client drivers around safety, cost efficiency/ value for money, sustainability and social value
• Knowledge and experience of digital design tools
